Words by Sam Robinson
In a world where streaming services are on the rise, we had no choice but to add a new category to our annual readers’ poll: that of TV shows. Streaming has changed the television landscape, meaning we’re now consuming series all at once through bingeing, we’re watching on our computers and phones, and social media has transformed the way that we talk about TV.
There’s been some very strong programmes this year – from the sprawling and batty Twin Peaks: The Return (my personal favourite), to the confronting yet relevant The Handmaid’s Tale. There’s been some brilliant drama in 2017 – some that easily top cinema releases.
But we’ve crunched the numbers and it’s Netflix cult phenomenon Stranger Things 2 that has topped your votes. We can also announce that it topped the votes for our team as well, and is also the Reel Gospel TV Show of the Year. We were captivated by the way in which they recreated the 1980s through costume and soundtrack, evoking nostalgia about a world where kids used to hang out and explore, rather than stick their eyes on screens. The drama is nothing short of compelling, and the young cast bring excellent performances, just as good as the first season.
See below the list of your top five TV shows of 2017, along with why you loved these shows so much.
Reel Gospel Readers’ Top Five Shows of 2017*
Stranger Things 2
It’s a fantastic show with great characters and great writing.
It was awesome – team Steve! Woot!
An excellent follow up to the first season.
How it deals with reality and how it grasps darkness/evil is really impressive. It’s crazy to see how they pictured the pure evil and how different people deal with it in their helplessness.
This one got me hook line and sinker. Season 2 took off strongly from where season 1 finished and didn’t disappoint. It had everything in the first season that I loved. The music, 80s references and childhood adventures.
2. A Series of Unfortunate Events
A well done production. I enjoyed that they were able to go in much more depth like the books, rather than the movie that skimmed over all the stories.
I enjoyed the characters and learning more about their lives.
3. The Good Place
Funny with some good conversation starters.
4. The Handmaid’s Tale
Solid adaptation and also spoke into the climate of this year well.
Captivating even though it’s uncomfortable viewing as a Christian, in the way it critiques far right extremism.
5. Star Trek Discovery
Still good fun, despite going big budget.
And here are our writing team’s top five TV shows of the year:
- Stranger Things 2
- The Handmaid’s Tale
- Star Trek Discovery
- Twin Peaks: The Return
- The Good Place
