2015 Readers’ Film of the Year: Inside Out

Words by Sam Robinson

Disney Pixar have always been pretty groundbreaking with their films and big picture concepts, but after a few less-than-stellar releases in the last few years, Inside Out proved that they still know how to create a beautiful film. Centred on five emotions in the mind of an eleven-year-old girl, we loved Inside Out when it released in July (read our 4.5 star review here), and as it turns out, so did you.

Hundreds of votes were cast from around the world in our annual Readers’ Poll and you voted Inside Out as your favourite film of 2015. See below the list of your ten favourite movies of 2015. Here’s what some of you said about why Inside Out was your favourite:

‘It’s Pixar. And love the way emotions were depicted.’

‘A great family movie which raised helpful issues to discuss with my preteen daughters.’

Inside Out was by far my favourite since it beautifully combined the whimsical with the mature. It displayed a nuclear family at its peak, and spoke a positive message of embracing failure to move forward to success.’

‘They did a wonderful job of explaining our feelings in a way my kids would understand, plus it was super funny.’

‘How could you get better, animated kids movie speaking about emotions and the insight to how emotions work together – brilliant!’

‘It made you aware of the emotions involved in our makeup and the part they play.’

‘It was a very philosophically mental film!’

‘The way Pixar made an entertaining kids movie that was also able to address some deep issues like depression was pretty special. Plus Amy Poehler is the best. Plus Bing Bong was awesome.’

‘I love the way it explored the feeling of sadness, acknowledging that we need to sit with sadness for a bit and not try to move on quickly. It reminded me of Job, and the lament Psalms. Often in life we are like the character of Joy who wanted to cheer people up all the time, but I think our motivation is often selfish because it’s more uncomfortable for us if people stay sad for a while.’

Thanks to everyone who voted, and congratulations to Disney Pixar for Inside Out, the 2015 Reel Gospel Readers’ Film of the Year. Tomorrow we will announce what you voted as your favourite album of 2015.
